Phyllis Christopher / Abortion Rights Rally Print
Taken at an Abortion Rights Rally in 1989 in San Francisco, photographer Phyllis Christopher captures the energy, protest and celebration of the people taking part in this dynamic photograph which has now been produced in a special print available exclusively at BALTIC Shop.
American photographer Phyllis Christopher is currently exhibiting at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in her show Contacts (23 October 2021 - 20 March 2022) which offers an intimate glimpse at lesbian community in San Francisco in the 90s through her archive of work from this time. Belonging to a politicised tradition of documentary photography, Christopher's handprinted and tinted images reflect how the camera participated in the performance of queer identities and feminist politics in the club and streets. Amid the connected crises of HIV/AIDS and gentrification, Christopher and her collaborators answered the historic absence of representations of lesbian life with an abundance of images showing acts of sexual intimacy and public protest â a community defiantly taking up space and taking care of their own. An ethic of consent frames Christopherâs images as photographer and subject negotiate what it means to be shown and seen as lesbian, both then and now.
BALTIC Shop is excited to offer this beautiful GiclĂ©e print to coincide with the exhibition and the publication of Christopherâs first monograph Dark Room: San Francisco Sex and Protest, 1988-2003 by Bookworks.
